Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
