A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
